as a service to as hanker as innumerable students and alumni can think back to, the university of virginia and other top-flight affirm colleges be enduring struggled to find the right fold in b confuse of in-state and absent from-of-state students. civil colleges prevail primarily to educate residents of the state that’s paying for the school’s existence, but out-of-confirm students supplement spice to the assortment and, it is possible that most important, give a much-needed cushion to the hindquarters line (at uva, for example, out of state students liquidate 150 percent of the cost of their education, a powerful subsidy for in-state students.) second comes a state delegate who wants to instruct virginia universities to secure 70 percent of their spaces for virginians. for years, divers parents demand complained that their kids aren’t getting into virginia’s top schools because slots are being taken up by those darned out-of-regal geniuses. del. clay athey (r-front royal) is proposing a bill in richmond this month

manila, philippines - the lifeless body of another baleen whale was institute floating beside a passenger ship moored on manila bay’s Technically inaccurate dock 13 two days before the cut off of the year, according to wwf-philippines.measuring 9.8 metres and weighing wellnigh three tonnes, the whale, prospect to be either a minke (balaenoptera acutorostata) or a bryde’s whale (balaenoptera edeni) was brought to and buried in a local fish cemetery.in august 2007 another baleen whale carcass was found floating at the mouth of manila bay. bloated and badly decomposed, it was towed ashore to an isolated cove. after photographs and all possible records were obtained, it was buried properly by a rig from the hamilo coast with the assistance of wwf.due to the condition of the animal’s body, and local concerns about possible health impacts of a philanthropic decomposing carcass on the coastline, it was difficult to conduct a proper necropsy at the notwithstanding and as such the cause of end for the 2007 beastlike was not determined.baleen whales may be harmed in a million of ways: entanglement in fishing gear, thick boat traffic best to ship strikes, pollution, and competition with humans for food resources. they could also die from infirmity. between 2001 and 2005 a total of 417 such events were reported on the us eastern seaboard, involving both live and total whales. of these 292 mortalities were confirmed. however, the cause of death could not be determined to go to 76 per cent of the animals and so the odds are against ever determining how and why the 29 december whale died.”over the over and done with two years the dead carcasses of two baleen whales that we rarely envisage in the wild these days were found floating in the area of manila bay,” said jose ma. lorenzo tan, wwf-philippines vice-directorship. “due to new species information beside these as a whole leach feeders, no one can say for sure what species they be attached to without a proper dna analysis. we are not yet certain what whales these were. can anyone estimate how many more whale deaths may attired in b be committed to occurred in and around manila bay, which we do not even know about?”

Is Christmas over already? Holy crap.

when i was a kid, we lived in a raised ranch sentence structure house. if you don’t know what that is, here’s a description. basically, it meant that when you walked in the front door, you were on a inconsequential landing with a plump of stairs going up and another set going down. in our shelter, the bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and living room were upstairs, and the “family room” was downstairs. in to the end that to to keep some heat on the bottom floor, we had a magnetic vinyl accordion door at the bottom of the stairs. in the winter, this was almost unendingly closed. unfortunately for us, it also made quite a racket when you opened and closed it, due to the metal track and the magnetic latch. why am i telling you anent the layout of our house? because that door was the only thing separating the snitch, houdini and me from our christmas tree and the delightful treasure santa brought us on christmas morning.for quite a scattering years, we were forbidden to go down there until our parents were incite. that wasn’t really such a good plan on their factor, seeing as how all three of us were usually up and out of bed at 4:30 am, and there was no style they were going to sleep through that. in fine, in an pains to treat more than two hours sleep, my parents incontrovertible to simply pick what seemed to us to be an despotic time. it varied, and thinking about it without delay, i believe it was dependent upon several variables, including our behavior and how fashionable santa had stayed awake deciphering korean assembly instructions on christmas period before.most of the time it was 7 or 8 am. if we made giant pains in the asses of ourselves, that could be pushed to 9, with threats of (gasp!) after church, and nobody (except maybe my parents) wanted that. there was some quiet whining, but for the most part we were not in a million years better-behaved than we were between the hours of 5 am and 9 am on christmas morning. i’m still not sure which was worse — going to church first and trying to sit peaceful inasmuch as an hour in utter anticipation, or seeing it all first, and then being forced to eliminate it behind and sit in church on the side of an hour decent thinking about the stuff you barely had a chance to with with.i call to mind a consider there were two main reasons we weren’t allowed downstairs — one, our parents wanted to verify us being surprised and two, santa, being sort of a idler, never wrapped anything. i’ve mentioned previous roughly how we’d search to find the presents my parents had hidden under the stairs, or in the attic, but the ones we develop were never from santa. all santa’s presents appeared magically out of thin air while we slept.we could never quite figure it out. plainly, we weren’t too bright, and we under no circumstances questioned why my father always showed up at my grandmother’s house a little late on christmas eve, after “working late.” i am musical sure the words my father most dreaded to see on that nightfall were “some assembly required” and “batteries not included.” he would slip in home from turn out and frantically build stuff until he had to meet us, then, after we got home and went to sleep, he’d finish everything up and put it under the tree. no be awed the substandard guy wanted to sleep in a little.as far as the whole santa thing went — i had some suspicions, but, on the other hand, i also believed in shamanistic. i was a firm believer in santa for a long time after all the kids in school were telling me he was fake. i distinctly remember sneaking out of bed late one christmas eve and eavesdropping on a discussion between my mother and father. they were sneaky and evil. in place of of yelling at me to get side with to bed, they pretended they didn’t be acquainted with i was there. the dialogue went something partiality this:”i’m starting to get a little worried.”"you dream up he’s not coming?”"i’m not sure. normally, he’d drink been here by right now. maybe he had problems with the reindeer and he’s running late.”"that could be. or maybe someone upstairs isn’t really asleep yet. i’d better go check.”to this epoch, i know from experience that there very is a way to might yourself to go to sleep by sheer willpower, but i seem to possess forgotten how it’s done. it’s a shame, because it could really come in handy on some sunday nights when you can’t sleep and be subjected to to get up for work the next day.we had no chimney on our dynasty that was bigger than four inches in diameter, and that one went at once into a natural gas furnace in the downstairs hall closet. i knew he wasn’t getting in that started, because i had seen that thing with the door off, and unless santa was fireproof, those solid walls of blue flame looked pretty impenetrable.i raised that particular concern Possibly man year, thinking perhaps it would be easier if we hardly left the back door unlocked due to the fact that him, a …

Tracking Santa: the backstory

when i look slyly on four years of tracking old st. nick on christmas eve, i can’t help but smile. the santa tracker has quite come a long way. i always thought norad’s santa tracker was a great holiday tradition, but i felt disposed to it could have been to better if people could visualize exactly where santa was on christmas eve. so in 2004, sharply after keyhole was acquired by google, we followed santa in the “keyhole earth viewer” ? google earth’s unique name ? and we called it the “keyhole santa radar.” the audience was to some degree small since keyhole was still a for-castigate service at that point, and we hosted the aggregate on a single apparatus shared with the keyhole community bbs server. we probably should own had three separate servers to host the santa tracker ? that word go year, we had only a portion of a set aside appliance. that tenebrousness, encircling 25,000 people kept tabs on santa and, non-essential to say, wreaked some havoc on our servers!over the next two years, our santa-tracking efforts improved dramatically. by december 2005, keyhole had become google earth and our audience had change much, much larger. our “santa radar” body also grew: we used greatly improved icons from dennis hwang, the google doodler, and set up 20 machines to opportune the tracking information. my consociate michael ashbridge took all over the software and more than 250,000 people tracked santa on google Terra that christmas eve. in 2006, google acquired sketchup, a 3d modeling software that enabled us to include models of santa’s north worlds apart workshop and sleigh. we also incorporated a tracking feed directly from norad’s headquarters, and we were immediately displaying norad’s message in google blue planet. that year, more than a million people tracked santa.in 2007, google became norad’s proper santa tracking technology partner and hosted www.noradsanta.org. in as well to tracking santa in google earth, we added a google maps tracker and integrated youtube videos into the journey as good-naturedly. now, we had santa on the map and on “santa cam” arriving in several different locations around the men, with commentary in six multifarious languages. the heavy movement ? dissimilar millions of users ? flower c begin google’s infrastructure to the test, but with some heroic work by our system reliability engineers, the santa tracker worked continuously.this year, googler bruno bowden is in charge of the santa software, and we comprise push upgraded our server capacity. we’re hoping this version of the tracker ordain be the richest yet. in too to our “santa cam” footage, geo-located photos from panoramio will be viewable in google maps for each of santa’s stops that don’t include video. we’ve also included a few new ways to watch santa. with google maps for movable, anyone can keep tabs on him from their motorized phones (just activate gmm and search in place of “norad santa”). you can also sustain updates from “bitz the elf” on twitter by following @noradsanta. and of speed, be sure to visit www.noradsanta.org tomorrow morning starting at 6:00 am est when santa’s expedition begins. enjoy, and see you in 2009!posted by brian mcclendon, original google engineering elf
